Institutes & Centers

Several centres function at the Department. They support scientific activities of young scientists. Mathematical physics is developed in co-operation with the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Czech Academy of Science (UJF AV ČR) in the Doppler Institute (http://doppler.ujf.cas.cz/). Nuclear and particle physics is supported by the centre of ultra-relativistic nuclear collisions (http://physics.fjfi.cvut.cz/cfrjs/). Development and Transfer of advanced technologies of the world’s leading laboratories is ensured by the Centre of Excellence for advanced detector systems (http://labtech.fjfi.cvut.cz/).

 

Doppler Institute

Doppler logo blue 96The Doppler Institute (DI) was founded in 1993. Its activity is financed by external sources (grants). Its staff are employees of FJFI (from the Department of Mathematics and Physics), of the Czech Academy of Science (from the Institute of Nuclear Physics) and of the University in Hradec Králové. The Doppler Institute focuses on science and research and educates engineering and PhD students in the science of mathematical physics with an emphasis on the latest trends in mathematical and quantum physics. Arising from this, DI has established close co-operation with leading specialists from other institutes (AV ČR, MFF UK, foreign institutes). The educational object of DI is to help talented students and PhD students in their bachelor’s projects, research work, master´s theses and doctoral dissertations in interesting fields of interest. DI also supplies contacts with specialists from abroad. In agreement with its programme it organizes its regular Doppler Institute Seminar, Quantum Circle and other lectures and seminars, arranges regular colloquia “Integrable systems”, runs the regular Students ´Winter School “Mathematical Physics”, organizes scientific international conferences , takes care of international student exchanges.

Centre for research of ultra-relativistic nuclear collisions

cfrjs discretPhysics of ultra-relativistic nuclear collisions (FRJS) does research into extreme states of nuclear matter. Experimental data collected on relativistic nuclei accelerators in leading international research centres (BNL, USA and CERN, Switzerland) play an essential role in understanding the property of matter in the first microseconds the Universe´s existence. Recently in the laboratories of CERN and BNL, with the participation of Czech scientists, a state of matter which had a temperature a hundred thousand times higher than that inside the Sun and a density sixty times higher than the temperature inside the atomic nucleus was reached. The target of FRJS is to understand how collective phenomena and macroscopic properties arise from the fundamental laws of the microworld, in a system with a significant number of degrees of freedom, such as hot hadrons matter or quark-gluon plasma. The objective of the Centre is to establish and stabilise a strong team of experimenters and theoreticians in one of the most dynamic branches of research. To achieve this, we want to concentrate the available human and material potential into one professionally headed structure offering the best conditions for participation in leading international experiments (ALICE, STAR), and for further connected activities in the fields of theory and detectors. The Centre will also be responsible for the study program for students of their respective branches and will improve contacts between the school and the Czech Academy of Science. It will also increase the frequency and quality of staff and student exchanges with foreign partner organisations.

Laboratory of advanced detection technologies

The Laboratory of advanced detection technologies is a leading university laboratory in the field of research and development of new technologies of ionizing radiation detection.

Its activities are as follows:

  • Research and development of cutting-edge technologies for the detection of ionising radiation.

  • Participation in instrumentation of leading international experiments in particle physics.

  • Study of technology transfer from fundamental research to practical applications.

  • Integration of our students into international top-research projects.
